center;\">In this video, I talk about why it is<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">that throughout my bodybuilding career, for the most part<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and since the 1990s, late 1990s,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I have not used any <a href=\"https:\/\/naturallyintense.net\/blog\/diet\/nutrition\/are-protein-shakes-bad-for-you-and-do-they-work\/\">protein shakes<\/a> nor do I advocate it<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">or use it with my clients<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">who are getting ready for body building competitions<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">or any clients.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s really something I completely stand against<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and in this video,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;m going to talk about why I don&#8217;t use them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And hopefully it helps you<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">make a little bit of a more informed<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and less marketing-oriented decision<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">in terms of whether you should be using<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">protein shakes or not.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">My Muscle Mass Gains Without Using Protein Shakes<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So, today we&#8217;ll talk about why it is<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">that I stopped using protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So just some background.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When I started training in Trinidad,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I was 125 pounds, six feet tall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Over the course, from the age of 14 years old<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">when I started, being painfully skinny, to<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">20 years old, just about 19-20 years old,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I went from 125 pounds<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to 198 and a half pounds in contest shape.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Not just 198 and a half pounds off season,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Contest shape, pretty much cut.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">That&#8217;s a significant amount of muscle mass<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">that I put on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And during that period of time,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I didn&#8217;t have protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I was a teenager growing up in Trinidad,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I didn&#8217;t have access to any of those things.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3321\" Experience (Getting Fat) From Using Protein Shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And I would read the magazines<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and really and truly think that one day<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;ll come to the United States, and I did at 20 years old.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And I always felt that when I came here,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;d be able to have access to protein shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and I&#8217;d be just like the guys in the magazines<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">who were so much more developed than I was.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Little did I know then that it was really,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">because they were on drugs,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and I wasn&#8217;t on drugs and would never be on drugs,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">but the magazines really created for us back then<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">this idea that you really needed protein shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to be successful as a bodybuilder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So much so that I completely ignored the fact that<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I had accomplished so much<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">without even touching a protein shake.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But when I came to United States<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and I was in a position all of a sudden<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to have access to protein shakes and afford protein shakes,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I really expected that there would be<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">this tremendous change in my physique,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">a tremendous change in my performance at the gym,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and I don&#8217;t think anything really happened.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If anything, to be very honest, I got fat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I came to the US at 198 and a half pounds, as I said,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and by the age of 24, four years later,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I was 252 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Before I started my preparations<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">for my first natural bodybuilding contest<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">here in United States,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I was 252<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and it didn&#8217;t feel good.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I was having a protein shake every day<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and I was eating<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">with the idea too of trying to put as much muscle mass<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and mass in general as possible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The whole bulking up idea,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">which I do not advocate either.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And I haven&#8217;t done as well, since the late &#8217;90s,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;m going to do a video about that as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3322\" Of No Protein Shakes During Natural Bodybuilding Contest Prep<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But what was the most stand out to me<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">was that when I dieted down for my first contest,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I was starting to diet down for my first contest<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">my bodybuilding coach, Mr. Ian Mercer,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">who is perhaps one of the greatest<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">natural bodybuilding coaches of all time,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">along with Charlie Carollo,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">who was the then owner of Fifth Avenue Gym<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and chairman of the then, I believe, WNBF|INBF<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(or it could even predate that.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But what they told me was that before a contest,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">you stop taking protein shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">when you&#8217;re doing your preparations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And that didn&#8217;t make much sense to me<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8217;cause I said, well, I thought protein shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">were really an important part of bodybuilding<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and that you needed that extra protein<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to put on muscle mass and everything else.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And Ian Mercer, my coach as I said,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">looked at me and said, &#8220;No, before a competition,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">you take all those things out<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8217;cause it&#8217;s not going to help you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You only eat solid food.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Now, some background.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Anything that Ian Mercer told me back then, and even today,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I just listen and go ahead with it<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">because the man had literally decades of experience<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">at the time when I met him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And I just had a couple of competitions under my belt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And I think one of the most important factors<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">is being able to listen and learn<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">from those who&#8217;ve gone before.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And I&#8217;ve always had a certain reverence<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">for those who I worked with and I listened to him implicitly<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and I stopped the protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And I cut down, in a very legendary way, from 252 pounds<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to my contest weight that I came in for my show<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">at 209 pounds three months later.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So I lost a lot and I was actually surprised<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">that in the four-year period, with all those protein shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">that I wasn&#8217;t bigger than that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Yes, I put on just about maybe nine and a half pounds,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">which is good over a four-year period.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s excellent actually over a four-year period.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But I wasn&#8217;t sure that having the protein shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">made that much of a difference<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">considering the progress I was making<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">before I was not taking any protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Why I Stopped Using Protein Shakes Permanently 25 Years Ago<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And then here&#8217;s the strange thing<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I felt better than I ever did<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">when I stopped using those protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My stomach felt better.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My digestion was better.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My energy levels were better.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I was cutting down.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I was leaner.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I looked my best.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I didn&#8217;t lose any strength.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I replaced the liquid protein I was taking<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">with solid protein<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and I felt overall better,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">more like my natural self and my normal self.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And at the end of the competition, which I won,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I told myself, well, if I feel so good<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">without the protein shakes and did so well<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">before without protein shakes,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">why should I go back to using protein shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">on a regular basis?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And so I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I stopped completely.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">That was somewhere around maybe 1997.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And I haven&#8217;t had a protein shake since.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Comparison of Natural Bodybuilders Using Protein Shakes vs Those Not Using Protein Shakes<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So my clients, as I went on<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and became also a bodybuilding coach<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and started training clients,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">a lot of them would come to me and they&#8217;d be adamant<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">about the fact that they would not stop<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">taking protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">They were completely adamant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And at the time I would allow it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And so as I always talk<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">about the importance of experimentation,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">what I had was this really interesting<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">controlled experiment front of me,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">in that I had some clients<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">who are getting ready for competitions,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">trying to get as lean as possible,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">men and women who were taking protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And then I had others who were exactly doing the same thing,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">eating more or less the same diet,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">training with me, training pretty much the same way<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and not taking protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: said,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">those who kept on taking protein shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">did not lose as much body fat<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">as those who were not taking protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The protein shakes did seem to make a difference.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The ones who were consuming no protein shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">had the same protein intakes as those with the shakes,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">except those who were taking the shakes,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">they were getting liquid protein.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Some of them were taking as many as two shakes a day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So why is that?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Why is it that taking protein shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">seems to have a bit of an adverse effect<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">in terms of body fat reduction?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Why Protein Shakes Don\u2019t Work As Well As Solid Protein For Fat Loss<\/span><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Well, there is a reason for it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If we think about the molecular structure of fats,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">carbohydrates and proteins<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and how our body breaks down these macro nutrients<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">for our body to be able to use them,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">we can see a bit of an understanding of how it works.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So molecules of fats and molecules of carbohydrates,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">they pretty much are easily broken down.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">They&#8217;re very much easily broken down by the body<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">because it&#8217;s not as complex a structure as protein.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">To break down protein,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">our body has to use more energy<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">than it does to break down carbohydrates or fat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So with that being said,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">if I was to consume 200 calories worth of protein,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and I was also able to consume 200 calories worth of<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">either fats or carbohydrates,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">the amount of energy that my body would have to use<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to break it down,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">would essentially create what&#8217;s called a thermic effect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3327\" style=\"text-align: center;\">do have a thermic effect,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">but protein has the highest one<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">because those molecular strands are so complex<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and if you eat something like a chicken breast,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">your body has to break down that chicken breast<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">into the individual essential amino acids,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">which then go into your bloodstream<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and your body can use.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Your body can&#8217;t use solid protein.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Your body has to break it down<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">into the individual amino acids.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And that&#8217;s important because that requires,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">like I said, energy,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and creates the thermic effect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But every time you eat a protein meal,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">a solid protein meal that is,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">your metabolism increases slightly<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">as it breaks down everything<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">into the individual amino acids.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Now, if you&#8217;re taking a pre-digested protein drink,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">it&#8217;s a little bit different, like the whey proteins,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">even from the vegan versions as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s just not the same.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s already broken down.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So, you&#8217;re not going to have as much of a thermic effect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter calories<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">coming in at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And let&#8217;s talk for a second about<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">how our bodies are designed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Now, the only real liquid calories that the human body<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">is designed to take in is that of human breast milk<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and human breast milk is by all means,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and all milk is a weight gain formula for young mammals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">That&#8217;s all it is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Breast milk is a weight formula for young mammals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Now you think about something like Whey Protein Shakes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It sounds complicated, but Whey is a milk product.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It is a milkshake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">All the marketing in the world can&#8217;t change that fact.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s still a milkshake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And as we know, our body as we get older,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">is designed to take in solid foods not liquid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Liquid calories coming in<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">tend to be a problem for us<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">because it&#8217;s too much coming in at one point in time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When too many calories come in at one point in time,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">even though it&#8217;s not high in fat,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">you still have that problem of<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">your body is not designed<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to take in too many calories coming in at one time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So, what does it [your body] do?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If there&#8217;s too much coming in,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">either we use it as energy<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">or we hold on to some of it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So, I think as well that if you think about<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">how it would work,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">the thermic effect from a protein shake<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">is never going to be the same as what&#8217;s going to happen<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">eating solid food<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and I&#8217;ve been able to prove it with clients.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When clients switch from solid,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">sorry, switch from a liquid protein intake<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to the same amount of protein from solid foods,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">they do see a significant increase<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">in muscle mass, strength and decrease in body fat<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">when or if they&#8217;re trying to reduce their body fat levels.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Protein shakes don&#8217;t seem to be the best solution<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">if you&#8217;re trying to really maximize your muscle mass,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">or I would probably say, if you&#8217;re trying to lose body fat<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">especially so.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" center;\">It&#8217;s interesting as well,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">that so many fitness enthusiasts<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">talk about the importance of being natural,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">eating natural foods and unprocessed foods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And I&#8217;m a big advocate as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And looking back, it was one of the reasons too,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">why I stopped using protein shakes because<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">there&#8217;s nothing more unnatural than a protein shake.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It doesn&#8217;t exist in nature in any form whatsoever<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and you can&#8217;t take natural ingredients,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">put it together in an unnatural way,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">introduce something that&#8217;s completely new to the human diet<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and say, because it has natural ingredients it&#8217;s natural,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">it&#8217;s not, that&#8217;s not how it works.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You can take all the organic products you want<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to make organic ice cream,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">it&#8217;s still ice cream.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s still bad for you if you&#8217;re thinking about trying to lose weight,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">if you&#8217;re thinking about trying to watch,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">your caloric intake,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">the same applies to protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3330\" Companies<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The other thing that was very troubling<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">was that as I became more involved<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">in the bodybuilding world,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I was able to see a bit of a dissonance<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">between what people have said they took<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and what they really took.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I personally knew several bodybuilders<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">who were huge endorsers of different protein shakes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and they never took a protein shake in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">They sold it, but they never took it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And myself, as I became more and more involved<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and more successful in bodybuilding,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I got contacted by several brands and they would ask me,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">would you endorse our brand in exchange for,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">usually they would offer free products,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">which I wasn&#8217;t interested in<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">because I don&#8217;t use supplements at all.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And in some cases, they would offer some money for it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And my response was always,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">well, I don&#8217;t really believe in taking protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And they were always saying,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">in every single piece of correspondence we ever had,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">it didn&#8217;t matter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I didn&#8217;t have to use the protein shakes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I just had to say that I did!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And say that my results and my gains and my success<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">were due to me using this particular product.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Now, integrity is something that&#8217;s very important to me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And I see in the fitness industry,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">so many personal trainers,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">so many athletes with their sponsorships that and the other,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and they advocate the use of things<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">that they don&#8217;t necessarily believe in<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">because they make money from it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Because they have a vested interest in selling it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;m going to tell you, through my entire career,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I have never sold any form of supplement,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">never advocated it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;ve walked away from a lot of money on the table,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and early on in my career,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">when things were really hard,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I looked hard at those decisions I was making,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">but it&#8217;s important for us to walk the walk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s important for us to be honest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s not about making a buck<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and it&#8217;s not about misleading the public<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">in saying that you&#8217;re taking something that you don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The other problem as well<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">was the fact that so many of those athletes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">use anabolic steroids, and if you do<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">it doesn&#8217;t matter whether you use protein shakes or not.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We have to be honest about it,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">honest about what we do and what we don&#8217;t do.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And my job as a personal trainer<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">so far has always been enough for me<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to earn an honest living.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Anything outside of that might bring me more income,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">but it&#8217;s not going to help me sleep at High Intensity Training.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nFirst leg workout of the year and already pushing it!&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nI haven&#039;t done a stiff leg deadlift over 315lbs for about 3 years at this point, and I did my last set with 315lbs and comfortably got to 10 reps and decided I had far too much gas left in the tank and that I should go up in weight.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nSo I did.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nI figured I might get a solid 6 reps in, but I made it to 7 and I think I could have gone on to get a full 10 reps BUT that&#039;s when good judgement prevailed.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nAs a bodybuilder having not trained this heavy for so many years, the shock of this much weight would be more than enough to stimulate muscle growth, and doing more reps wouldn&#039;t yield any greater returns, only increase the likelihood of injury.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nIt&#039;s not about the numbers, it&#039;s about training to a point where you achieve your goal, and it&#039;s important to have a goal in mind as a bodybuilder based on increasing muscle mass rather than hitting a particular number.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nBesides, if in my 20&#039;s I never did more than 405lbs on a stiff leg deadlift, it doesn&#039;t make any sense going heavier than when I am almost 50!&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nCould I deadlift more at this point?&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nAbsolutely but just because you can doesn&#039;t mean you should!&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nSo keep those weights in a good working range, keep it safe and as always Excelsior!!!
