possible to go from being someone<\/p>\n<p>who&#8217;s slightly overweight to a champion bodybuilder<\/p>\n<p>and still feel like you&#8217;re fat?<\/p>\n<p>Is it possible to be six feet tall, 125 pounds,<\/p>\n<p>and become a champion natural bodybuilder<\/p>\n<p>and still feel like you&#8217;re skinny?<\/p>\n<p>The answer to all of these is a resounding yes.<\/p>\n<p>And in this video, I&#8217;m going to talk a little bit<\/p>\n<p>about something that we don&#8217;t talk about very much,<\/p>\n<p>which is how a negative self-image<\/p>\n<p>is very often the catalyst, the driving force<\/p>\n<p>that pushes us to do things like lose weight,<\/p>\n<p>to do things like transform our body, build muscle.<\/p>\n<p>But that, unless somewhere along the line,<\/p>\n<p>we learn to develop a positive self-image<\/p>\n<p>and learn to allow ourselves to be driven<\/p>\n<p>not by forces of discontent with how we look,<\/p>\n<p>but of self-acceptance,<\/p>\n<p>that we ultimately can end up sabotaging<\/p>\n<p>any progress that we make.<\/p>\n<p>In this video, I&#8217;m going to talk about<\/p>\n<p>how people can really sabotage their progress<\/p>\n<p>if they don&#8217;t learn to see themselves<\/p>\n<p>and see their progress.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also going to talk about what you can do<\/p>\n<p>to help yourself see your progress<\/p>\n<p>and share a little bit about my journey as well<\/p>\n<p>because I&#8217;m that skinny kid who was 125 pounds<\/p>\n<p>and was competing as a bodybuilder decades later<\/p>\n<p>and still feeling like a skinny kid.<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m also the one who&#8217;s trained people<\/p>\n<p>who&#8217;ve lost over 100 pounds<\/p>\n<p>and seen them lose all of their gains<\/p>\n<p>because they were unable to see themselves<\/p>\n<p>as they self-image,<\/p>\n<p>and self-image is a very personal topic<\/p>\n<p>because it&#8217;s one that affects<\/p>\n<p>and affected not just my clients,<\/p>\n<p>but affected me personally.<\/p>\n<p>And I think that as we go along in this video,<\/p>\n<p>we will talk about the biological basis<\/p>\n<p>for why it is that we suffer so much<\/p>\n<p>by not being able to see our progress, why that is.<\/p>\n<p>Why is it so hard for us to see our progress?<\/p>\n<p>And we&#8217;ll talk also about how important it is<\/p>\n<p>to see our progress, because if we don&#8217;t,<\/p>\n<p>we tend to A Client Who Lost Over 100lbs But Couldn\u2019t See Any Progress<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to start with a very sad example<\/p>\n<p>and I will term it and phrase it<\/p>\n<p>as my first great personal training accomplishment,<\/p>\n<p>and my first great personal training failure.<\/p>\n<p>And that particular case<\/p>\n<p>is the case of a former client of mine,<\/p>\n<p>one of my first clients in my second year<\/p>\n<p>as a personal trainer,<\/p>\n<p>who we will call Mr. A,<\/p>\n<p>who lost 103 pounds training with me.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a little background about my particular training style.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s high intensity training three times a week,<\/p>\n<p>and the workouts lasts<\/p>\n<p>anywhere between 10, 15 minutes, that&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<p>No cardio, everything with regard to weight loss<\/p>\n<p>is a combination of those three high intensity workouts<\/p>\n<p>and dietary instruction that&#8217;s given directly<\/p>\n<p>from me, to my clients.<\/p>\n<p>Now, today, I&#8217;ve had the privilege,<\/p>\n<p>the honor, and the blessing<\/p>\n<p>of having worked with dozens of people<\/p>\n<p>who&#8217;ve lost over 50 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>And I would probably say somewhere about<\/p>\n<p>six or seven, who&#8217;ve lost 100 pounds over the past 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>But the first one was a complete surprise to me.<\/p>\n<p>I had no idea that my training style<\/p>\n<p>was going be something that could help somebody<\/p>\n<p>lose that much weight.<\/p>\n<p>I was a teenager, I was maybe 18 years old<\/p>\n<p>when I first started treating Mr. A<\/p>\n<p>and I did see that there was some potential<\/p>\n<p>for weight loss with my training style<\/p>\n<p>because I had my first client<\/p>\n<p>who had lost some weight with it,<\/p>\n<p>but he was one of those perfect clients.<\/p>\n<p>People who do everything you tell them to do.<\/p>\n<p>I gave him a dietary guide, he followed it to the T.<\/p>\n<p>We had three sessions a week,<\/p>\n<p>he showed up at every single session.<\/p>\n<p>As he kept on going,<\/p>\n<p>he kept on losing more and more weight.<\/p>\n<p>And the more weight he lost,<\/p>\n<p>the happier he seemed to become.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Mr. A was a very eloquent and loquacious man,<\/p>\n<p>middle-aged, always talking,<\/p>\n<p>and really the type of person who fills a room<\/p>\n<p>with his presence.<\/p>\n<p>And as he lost more and more weight,<\/p>\n<p>he became so much more animated, so much more vocal.<\/p>\n<p>He would literally end up being<\/p>\n<p>one of my greatest ambassadors<\/p>\n<p>because he would stop everyone that he could<\/p>\n<p>before his workouts, to tell them how much progress he had made,<\/p>\n<p>to talk about how fantastic the whole training program was,<\/p>\n<p>and how happy he was with his accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>Really and truly, a joy to see someone<\/p>\n<p>transform in front of my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>And over the course of about 13, 14 months,<\/p>\n<p>he had lost 103 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>And every once in a while,<\/p>\n<p>he would even bring in his old pants<\/p>\n<p>to show just how big he was.<\/p>\n<p>It was remarkable, I mean, truly remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>And I had never, as a young trainer,<\/p>\n<p>seen any type of weight loss like that first hand.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time I&#8217;d ever seen anybody<\/p>\n<p>undergo such a remarkable transformation.<\/p>\n<p>And I was so happy, I really was so happy<\/p>\n<p>for myself, as far as being able to have helped him,<\/p>\n<p>and also for Mr. A.<\/p>\n<p>I really felt so proud of him,<\/p>\n<p>what he had accomplished, of what he had done.<\/p>\n<p>But then something curious happened.<\/p>\n<p>The normally gregarious, Mr. A became quiet,<\/p>\n<p>he&#8217;d come to the gym,<\/p>\n<p>and he wouldn&#8217;t say as much as he would before.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped talking about his accomplishment,<\/p>\n<p>and I would ask him what was wrong,<\/p>\n<p>and he would say everything was fine.<\/p>\n<p>Until one day, he very abruptly said<\/p>\n<p>that he felt like he hadn&#8217;t lost any weight whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>And that it had all been for nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;ve had the honor as well<\/p>\n<p>of spending a good 17 years of my life, my adult life,<\/p>\n<p>working in social services during which period of time<\/p>\n<p>I was really privileged as well to have learned so much<\/p>\n<p>in terms of clinical psychology and working with individuals<\/p>\n<p>in terms of mental health issues,<\/p>\n<p>and also issues like body image.<\/p>\n<p>But at the time I&#8217;m an 18, maybe 19 year old teenager.<\/p>\n<p>I have no idea why it is and how it could be<\/p>\n<p>that Mr. A, who had lost over 100 pounds,<\/p>\n<p>couldn&#8217;t see that he had lost any weight at all.<\/p>\n<p>He really felt like he hadn&#8217;t achieved anything.<\/p>\n<p>And it was puzzling, it was disconcerting,<\/p>\n<p>it was disturbing to me.<\/p>\n<p>It literally kept me up at night<\/p>\n<p>because I would really feel,<\/p>\n<p>not just a matter of confused, but I was worried about him,<\/p>\n<p>I was really worried about Mr. A.<\/p>\n<p>And sure enough, he started missing workouts,<\/p>\n<p>which wasn&#8217;t like him.<\/p>\n<p>Then he started<\/p>\n<p>eating off his diet and it was at that point<\/p>\n<p>that I came here to the United States<\/p>\n<p>and I never saw Mr. M, Mr. A, sorry, again.<\/p>\n<p>But I kept in touch with people who were good friends of his<\/p>\n<p>and they said that he, within the course<\/p>\n<p>of a couple of months after my departure,<\/p>\n<p>put all the weight back on.<\/p>\n<p>Now, anyone who knows me knows that I pride myself,<\/p>\n<p>not on being a weight loss specialist.<\/p>\n<p>I pride myself on being the person that helps people<\/p>\n<p>lose weight and keep the weight off<\/p>\n<p>by teaching them life lessons<\/p>\n<p>that&#8217;ll allow them to sustainably keep their weight off.<\/p>\n<p>And here I was having had this client<\/p>\n<p>who had lost so much weight and put it all back on,<\/p>\n<p>probably even a little bit more than he initially had,<\/p>\n<p>and I felt like I failed him, and I did fail him.<\/p>\n<p>And I realized that I needed to incorporate<\/p>\n<p>a lot more in terms of self-awareness and self-image<\/p>\n<p>when working with my clients,<\/p>\n<p>not just focus on the physical.<\/p>\n<p>With Mr. A, I was spot on with all the physical parts,<\/p>\n<p>his diet, making the tweaks in his diet as he went along,<\/p>\n<p>his training, making sure the intensity was just enough<\/p>\n<p>to help him both build muscle<\/p>\n<p>and lose body fat at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>But we never spoke about the psychological implications<\/p>\n<p>of what it is to transform.<\/p>\n<p>And after Mr. A, I really began to look into it,<\/p>\n<p>not just for my other clients, but also for myself.<\/p>\n<p>So with my clients, I could clearly see that<\/p>\n<p>if you weren&#8217;t able to see the progress that you made,<\/p>\n<p>you&#8217;re much more likely to become frustrated<\/p>\n<p>for all that work you that self-image<\/p>\n<p>was so difficult to see when there&#8217;s a change in our bodies<\/p>\n<p>became really personal because Mr. A helped me reflect<\/p>\n<p>a little bit more on my own dissonance between who I was,<\/p>\n<p>how I looked, and how I felt.<\/p>\n<p>You see, at the time when I was probably about,<\/p>\n<p>let&#8217;s say 20 years old,<\/p>\n<p>I had already been competing<\/p>\n<p>in my native Trinidad and Tobago as a bodybuilder.<\/p>\n<p>I was able to hold my own on stage with bodybuilders.<\/p>\n<p>I started bodybuilding at 125 pounds, six feet tall,<\/p>\n<p>and I competed at 198 pounds right before I left Trinidad.<\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s a pretty big difference, 125 pounds to 198 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, if I was honest with myself,<\/p>\n<p>I would have to say that I didn&#8217;t really see<\/p>\n<p>a change in my body.<\/p>\n<p>I felt very, very much, and I know this sounds crazy because<\/p>\n<p>it in some ways is, a little bit,<\/p>\n<p>I almost saw the body that I had<\/p>\n<p>as this kind of abstract transient thing<\/p>\n<p>that wasn&#8217;t really me.<\/p>\n<p>That what was really me was a skinny kid<\/p>\n<p>and that what I saw in the mirror really didn&#8217;t reflect<\/p>\n<p>what I really looked like.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I would go on to compete here in United States<\/p>\n<p>very successfully, as a natural bodybuilder, again.<\/p>\n<p>Competing at really high natural bodybuilding levels<\/p>\n<p>and years went on.<\/p>\n<p>I got even into my thirties,<\/p>\n<p>I made a natural bodybuilding DVD,<\/p>\n<p>and I was still struggling<\/p>\n<p>with not seeing myself as a skinny kid.<\/p>\n<p>But I was working all during that time<\/p>\n<p>to be able to see myself as I was<\/p>\n<p>because I understood how dangerous it was<\/p>\n<p>for me to be where I was.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t healthy for me just to keep on thinking,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, I&#8217;m a skinny kid.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll never have big muscular arms.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll never have a really built physique.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That handicap that I felt I started off with, being skinny,<\/p>\n<p>being not really a big person, was one of the driving forces<\/p>\n<p>to make me become a bodybuilder.<\/p>\n<p>But as I went on, I could clearly see<\/p>\n<p>from the examples of other bodybuilders around me,<\/p>\n<p>who I worked with,<\/p>\n<p>that this negativity, even though it&#8217;s really<\/p>\n<p>almost ubiquitous in the bodybuilding world,<\/p>\n<p>this sense that we&#8217;re not good enough,<\/p>\n<p>that we need to get better, that we&#8217;re this skinny person,<\/p>\n<p>or we&#8217;re this overweight person<\/p>\n<p>and that we need to transform ourselves,<\/p>\n<p>and no matter how much you transform<\/p>\n<p>it&#8217;s never good enough because we can&#8217;t really see it.<\/p>\n<p>Others can, we can collect trophies,<\/p>\n<p>we can be on magazines, covers, sorry.<\/p>\n<p>We can be in videos, we can be all over Instagram,<\/p>\n<p>we can be very, very popular,<\/p>\n<p>we can have thousands of people comment<\/p>\n<p>on how fantastic we look,<\/p>\n<p>but it just,<\/p>\n<p>it tends to be hard for a lot of us in this field<\/p>\n<p>to see ourselves that way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">The Surprisingly High Rate Of Skewered Self Image In Bodybuilding And It\u2019s Negative Effects<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">\n<p>What I saw, especially in the natural bodybuilding world<\/p>\n<p>was that a lot of natural bodybuilders<\/p>\n<p>who were competing at the highest level<\/p>\n<p>had that same discord between what they looked like<\/p>\n<p>and how they saw themselves.<\/p>\n<p>And what I saw as well was the ones who were really unable<\/p>\n<p>to see themselves the way they were,<\/p>\n<p>were the ones who were the most tortured, yes,<\/p>\n<p>but also the ones who ended up eventually<\/p>\n<p>using anabolic steroids,<\/p>\n<p>abandoning the path of natural body building completely<\/p>\n<p>because they needed to be more.<\/p>\n<p>They felt that they weren&#8217;t good enough<\/p>\n<p>and they felt that all that they had accomplished<\/p>\n<p>didn&#8217;t amount to anything.<\/p>\n<p>And again, these are some of the top natural bodybuilders<\/p>\n<p>of all time, some of them.<\/p>\n<p>And they had remarkable physiques, they looked fantastic,<\/p>\n<p>but they weren&#8217;t happy, number one,<\/p>\n<p>and they never really enjoyed their physicality<\/p>\n<p>because they didn&#8217;t see themselves that way.<\/p>\n<p>And I<\/p>\n<p>was self-aware enough<\/p>\n<p>and I thank Mr. A&#8217;s experience for really focusing me<\/p>\n<p>on trying to not fall into that trap.<\/p>\n<p>And trying to learn how not to be part of that movement<\/p>\n<p>of people in the fitness industry<\/p>\n<p>who look fantastic on the outside,<\/p>\n<p>but don&#8217;t feel fantastic on the inside,<\/p>\n<p>and so over time, tend to sabotage themselves,<\/p>\n<p>tend to do really unhealthy things<\/p>\n<p>either to undo what they&#8217;ve accomplished<\/p>\n<p>or to do extreme things like use drugs<\/p>\n<p>because they don&#8217;t feel like they&#8217;re good enough.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t want to have to deal with any of that.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t want to go down that path.<\/p>\n<p>I also wanted to be at peace.<\/p>\n<p>And I also, very importantly,<\/p>\n<p>wanted to be somebody who was not hypocritical,<\/p>\n<p>telling my clients how important it was<\/p>\n<p>to have a positive self-image<\/p>\n<p>when I didn&#8217;t really have one myself.<\/p>\n<p>I had to put the work in, from the way I saw it,<\/p>\n<p>to do my utmost to come to some sense of equilibrium<\/p>\n<p>with who I was on the outside and who I was on the training work really helped me as well<\/p>\n<p>understand how important it was<\/p>\n<p>that we talk about that particular topic.<\/p>\n<p>Because what would tend to happen with most of my clients,<\/p>\n<p>and I don&#8217;t say some, I say most,<\/p>\n<p>at some point, they&#8217;re working really, really hard,<\/p>\n<p>they&#8217;re doing really, really, really well<\/p>\n<p>and they have a bad day.<\/p>\n<p>For some, it&#8217;s a bad day, for some it&#8217;s a bad week,<\/p>\n<p>some it&#8217;s bad days and they keep on happening,<\/p>\n<p>they keep on having from time to time.<\/p>\n<p>And during those bad days,<\/p>\n<p>they feel like they didn&#8217;t do much of anything.<\/p>\n<p>They look in the mirror and they feel like, you know,<\/p>\n<p>they may have lost 50 pounds, they don&#8217;t see it.<\/p>\n<p>They may have transformed their bodies<\/p>\n<p>and really have a perfect, sleek, tight, toned physique,<\/p>\n<p>just the way they wanted it,<\/p>\n<p>but that day, they didn&#8217;t feel that way.<\/p>\n<p>They may have been getting ready for a bodybuilding,<\/p>\n<p>bikini, figure, or a fitness competition,<\/p>\n<p>and they just have that feeling,<\/p>\n<p>even though they&#8217;re in really great shape,<\/p>\n<p>that they were totally out of shape,<\/p>\n<p>not a little out of shape, but totally out of shape.<\/p>\n<p>And I became really good at helping people<\/p>\n<p>walk their way through that feeling<\/p>\n<p>and make them understand that it&#8217;s a feeling.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s how you feel about that image<\/p>\n<p>in the mirror that you&#8217;re seeing.<\/p>\n<p>And whenever I would work with someone going through<\/p>\n<p>that period of &#8220;I&#8217;m not good enough,<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t feel like I did anything, I feel like a failure,<\/p>\n<p>I feel like a fraud, I feel like an impostor,<\/p>\n<p>I feel like I didn&#8217;t put any work in at all,<\/p>\n<p>I feel like I made no progress whatsoever,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>whenever I work with someone who is having those feelings,<\/p>\n<p>they became priorities because I knew what happens<\/p>\n<p>if it&#8217;s not addressed.<\/p>\n<p>If you keep on thinking that all that work you put in,<\/p>\n<p>all of the years, sometimes, of work you put in<\/p>\n<p>didn&#8217;t really amount to anything, if you dwell on it,<\/p>\n<p>you would self-sabotage, you will undo it.<\/p>\n<p>You will say, &#8220;Well, I ate healthy for all these months<\/p>\n<p>and I don&#8217;t really feel like I did much of anything.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to eat unhealthy.<\/p>\n<p>Forget it, screw it, I&#8217;m going to go off my diet.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to go to the gym, I&#8217;m not going to go work out,<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to show up for my appointments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s what tends to happen.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a very common thing that happens<\/p>\n<p>and it&#8217;s important to have someone<\/p>\n<p>when you&#8217;re standing on that ledge<\/p>\n<p>thinking that all that you&#8217;ve done<\/p>\n<p>hasn&#8217;t amounted to anything,<\/p>\n<p>that someone is there to kind of nudge you along.<\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s not something spoken about<\/p>\n<p>much in the fitness industry at all.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s almost a taboo subject.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, you might be surprised just how many<\/p>\n<p>of your favorite fitness personalities<\/p>\n<p>who probably, in their private moments,<\/p>\n<p>struggle with their self-image.<\/p>\n<p>And I know this for a fact because I know a lot of them<\/p>\n<p>and I&#8217;ve had a lot of the same conversations<\/p>\n<p>with some of the top fitness names on the planet,<\/p>\n<p>as I have with some of my clients who lost 10 pounds<\/p>\n<p>and felt like they didn&#8217;t achieve anything.<\/p>\n<p>The same conversation.<\/p>\n<p>I have the same conversation<\/p>\n<p>with someone who&#8217;s lost 20 pounds, 30 pounds,<\/p>\n<p>and feel like they didn&#8217;t do anything<\/p>\n<p>as I do with someone who is arguably among some of the top<\/p>\n<p>or considered to be among some of the top<\/p>\n<p>bodies on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>So that leads to a very important point,<\/p>\n<p>which is if you ever feel<\/p>\n<p>that all that you did is for nothing,<\/p>\n<p>and what you see in the mirror<\/p>\n<p>doesn&#8217;t reflect all the work you did,<\/p>\n<p>and you feel like it&#8217;s all worthless,<\/p>\n<p>it&#8217;s important to understand that that&#8217;s very much normal.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing wrong with you.<\/p>\n<p>And that a lot of people, in fact,<\/p>\n<p>more people than you would imagine,<\/p>\n<p>feel exactly the same way.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s extremely common.<\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s my working hypothesis as to why that is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3188\" style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">An Evolutionary Hypothesis That Explains Why It&#8217;s Difficult To See Our Body Transformations<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, diet-wise, everything that I<\/p>\n<p>talk about and put forward in terms of nutrition<\/p>\n<p>is usually based on evolutionary biology.<\/p>\n<p>And I feel that evolutionary biology also has a place<\/p>\n<p>in the psychology of how we as humans see ourselves<\/p>\n<p>and how we deal with something<\/p>\n<p>as novel as body transformation.<\/p>\n<p>So on a dietary point of view, if you eat something<\/p>\n<p>that&#8217;s, let&#8217;s say, a modern processed food,<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll throw one out for example.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s say you&#8217;re eating something horrible<\/p>\n<p>like, let&#8217;s say some heavily processed sugary cereals.<\/p>\n<p>Now eating some of those cold sugar cereals<\/p>\n<p>is akin to putting something into your body<\/p>\n<p>that over the past 2.2 million years<\/p>\n<p>of our time on the planet, never existed in the human diet.<\/p>\n<p>And so because of that discord, again,<\/p>\n<p>between how humans and our human ancestors have been eating<\/p>\n<p>shaped by our environment that shaped our bodies,<\/p>\n<p>if we eat outside of those particular parameters<\/p>\n<p>and introduce new and novel foods into our diet,<\/p>\n<p>very often, those novel foods can have some<\/p>\n<p>pretty negative side effects<\/p>\n<p>because our bodies aren&#8217;t adapted to work with them.<\/p>\n<p>Our bodies are designed to consume carbohydrates<\/p>\n<p>that are naturally high in bulk, high in fiber,<\/p>\n<p>tend to be also of a particular quantity<\/p>\n<p>that you do not get that much of it at one point in time.<\/p>\n<p>So by eating a box of sugary cereal,<\/p>\n<p>your body&#8217;s getting more calories<\/p>\n<p>than it normally would at one point, that&#8217;s number one,<\/p>\n<p>it is getting simple sugars in quantities<\/p>\n<p>and at speed of quicker delivery to your blood<\/p>\n<p>that is not something that would ever happen<\/p>\n<p>under natural circumstances, and all that sugar coming in<\/p>\n<p>is coming in with the absence of fiber.<\/p>\n<p>Now, because of that discrepancy between<\/p>\n<p>what our bodies are built to take in,<\/p>\n<p>which is carbohydrates that are high in fiber,<\/p>\n<p>low in sugars, high in bulk,<\/p>\n<p>compared to a processed food, which is low in fiber,<\/p>\n<p>high in calories, high in sugar.<\/p>\n<p>And again, the zero fiber is a problem as well,<\/p>\n<p>which also makes it easier to eat a lot of it.<\/p>\n<p>There are consequences.<\/p>\n<p>There are consequences in terms of how our insulin<\/p>\n<p>levels rise unnaturally as a result of eating such a food.<\/p>\n<p>There are consequences in terms of how it can, over time,<\/p>\n<p>really create an environment for fat deposits.<\/p>\n<p>Really high insulin levels, your body has no idea<\/p>\n<p>why it is that you have so many calories,<\/p>\n<p>so much sugars coming in at one point in time,<\/p>\n<p>so your body says, &#8220;All right, we don&#8217;t know what to do<\/p>\n<p>with all this coming in, store it.<\/p>\n<p>How do we store it?<\/p>\n<p>Fat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And we can see a clear connection between certain foods,<\/p>\n<p>especially processed foods,<\/p>\n<p>which tend to create not just fat storage,<\/p>\n<p>but fat storage in places<\/p>\n<p>where normally humans do not tend to store fat.<\/p>\n<p>It is called visceral abdominal fat.<\/p>\n<p>That is the fat that&#8217;s stored around your organs<\/p>\n<p>that creates that stomach that is so much a ubiquitous<\/p>\n<p>part of modern living for most people past a certain age.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s not natural.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a result of us doing something that&#8217;s not natural.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s eating not natural foods<\/p>\n<p>because our bodies aren&#8217;t adapted to it.<\/p>\n<p>Now, how does that have to do with self-image?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>If we consider the fact that homo sapiens have been<\/p>\n<p>the product of those millions of years of evolution,<\/p>\n<p>and evolution is simply the progression of a species<\/p>\n<p>shaped by the environment to survive in that environment<\/p>\n<p>in order to get to the point where the species<\/p>\n<p>can reproduce successfully.<\/p>\n<p>So because of that, there are a lot of things<\/p>\n<p>that are innately human that don&#8217;t necessarily line up<\/p>\n<p>with what we would probably call objective reality.<\/p>\n<p>See, objective reality is how the universe actually is.<\/p>\n<p>And none of us can see objective reality.<\/p>\n<p>We see reality through the lens of a body, a creature,<\/p>\n<p>a species that&#8217;s designed to survive<\/p>\n<p>in a very concrete world.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t see quarks, we don&#8217;t see atoms,<\/p>\n<p>we don&#8217;t see the effects of quantum physics<\/p>\n<p>in our everyday lives.<\/p>\n<p>All of those things are millions of miles<\/p>\n<p>away from our consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>We can understand intellectually, some of us can,<\/p>\n<p>but it&#8217;s not something that we think about in regular life.<\/p>\n<p>In regular life, what we see is what there is,<\/p>\n<p>and that&#8217;s pretty much all there is to it.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s all shaped by evolution.<\/p>\n<p>Evolution<\/p>\n<p>is very much a process for creating beings<\/p>\n<p>that are really good at survival,<\/p>\n<p>but it&#8217;s not a process designed to create beings<\/p>\n<p>that are perfect.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not perfect, and when I say perfect,<\/p>\n<p>it means there are things about us that are lacking<\/p>\n<p>in terms of even weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>For all those millions of years,<\/p>\n<p>obesity was never part of our makeup.<\/p>\n<p>Body transformation was not really something that happened.<\/p>\n<p>The transformation would happen around puberty<\/p>\n<p>where you went from being a child to an adult,<\/p>\n<p>male or female,<\/p>\n<p>and that&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;d be some hormonal changes<\/p>\n<p>that would change your body radically,<\/p>\n<p>but the person that you were in puberty<\/p>\n<p>was the person that you would see yourself becoming<\/p>\n<p>and your late adolescent self would be the image<\/p>\n<p>that you would develop of yourself<\/p>\n<p>for the rest of your life.<\/p>\n<p>And if you look at cultures that are very much traditional,<\/p>\n<p>hunter-gatherer cultures, for example,<\/p>\n<p>the older men and the older woman<\/p>\n<p>don&#8217;t look that much different.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s the gray hair and the wrinkles, yes, but physically,<\/p>\n<p>there&#8217;s not that much of a change<\/p>\n<p>in terms of body composition,<\/p>\n<p>the way there is here in developed countries.<\/p>\n<p>No one gets fat and no one loses a lot of fat.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t happen naturally<\/p>\n<p>because under natural circumstances,<\/p>\n<p>the foods that we eat do not create situations<\/p>\n<p>where we can end up being overweight.<\/p>\n<p>It just doesn&#8217;t happen.<\/p>\n<p>And so we&#8217;re not, from an evolutionary point of view,<\/p>\n<p>designed to detect and deal with<\/p>\n<p>those changes in our bodies.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing that you can think of,<\/p>\n<p>from an evolutionary point of view,<\/p>\n<p>that would be beneficial for us as humans<\/p>\n<p>to have developed over millions of years<\/p>\n<p>to say, &#8220;Well, I used to weigh this much,<\/p>\n<p>now I weigh this much,<\/p>\n<p>and so I&#8217;m going to see myself differently as I change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It never happened because, arguably,<\/p>\n<p>one could say that before the 20th century,<\/p>\n<p>the very idea of body transformation<\/p>\n<p>was probably a really, really rare occurrence<\/p>\n<p>given how much food people had access to,<\/p>\n<p>given the type of food people had access to.<\/p>\n<p>In most parts of the world,<\/p>\n<p>it just simply didn&#8217;t happen.<\/p>\n<p>This is a very new phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s novel, body transformation is new.<\/p>\n<p>And just like the new novel foods<\/p>\n<p>that our body is going to go crazy with,<\/p>\n<p>it&#8217;s the same with our ways of thinking.<\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t process it.<\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t figure out why is there this discrepancy<\/p>\n<p>between how I see myself and what I know,<\/p>\n<p>somewhere in the back of my mind, I look like.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not designed to see it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>How We Can Overcome Body Image Issues Through Cognitive Awareness<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"panels\" class=\"style-scope ytd-watch-flexy\">\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"style-scope ytd-engagement-panel-section-list-renderer\">\n<div id=\"body\" class=\"style-scope ytd-transcript-renderer\">\n<div class=\"cue-group style-scope ytd-transcript-body-renderer\">\n<div class=\"cues style-scope ytd-transcript-body-renderer\">\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">\n<p>Just knowing this, just having that cognitive awareness<\/p>\n<p>of the fact that we are not designed<\/p>\n<p>to see the changes in our body, in itself sparks something.<\/p>\n<p>Because unlike other animals,<\/p>\n<p>we can do more than simply be shaped<\/p>\n<p>by our evolutionary environment.<\/p>\n<p>We can develop our own ideas,<\/p>\n<p>we can develop our own ways of thinking<\/p>\n<p>because we are essentially learning machines.<\/p>\n<p>We can learn to see ourselves<\/p>\n<p>when there&#8217;s a body composition change,<\/p>\n<p>but it&#8217;s something we have to actively work at,<\/p>\n<p>we have to think about it, we have to reflect about it.<\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t be on autopilot.<\/p>\n<p>Autopilot is usually going be<\/p>\n<p>whatever body and physique you had during your adolescence<\/p>\n<p>to late adolescence, is the body and physique<\/p>\n<p>you&#8217;ll always think you have for the rest of your life.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s default.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re going to change your body,<\/p>\n<p>be it weight loss, weight gain,<\/p>\n<p>be it putting on muscle, be it losing pounds of body fat,<\/p>\n<p>you have to do some true work with your self awareness.<\/p>\n<p>If you lose five pounds,<\/p>\n<p>no matter how much you write it down,<\/p>\n<p>I wrote down every single pound I put on.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote down the measurements of my biceps as I went along,<\/p>\n<p>I wrote down the circumference<\/p>\n<p>of my thighs, my calves, my neck.<\/p>\n<p>I had all these numbers written down that could clearly show<\/p>\n<p>that I was no longer 125 pounds<\/p>\n<p>and I was no longer the skinny kid with 12 inch arms.<\/p>\n<p>It was there intellectually, but emotionally, it wasn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things that helped me was the understanding<\/p>\n<p>that there is this cognitive dissonance that goes on<\/p>\n<p>because of the fact that who we are<\/p>\n<p>and how we see ourselves<\/p>\n<p>is really formed during our adolescence<\/p>\n<p>and it&#8217;s really hard not to see yourself that way,<\/p>\n<p>very, very hard.<\/p>\n<p>But if you don&#8217;t start seeing yourself as you are,<\/p>\n<p>you risk undoing all that you&#8217;ve done.<\/p>\n<p>And even more importantly,<\/p>\n<p>you risk not enjoying, benefiting and being at peace<\/p>\n<p>with the accomplishment that you&#8217;ve achieved.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve worked to achieve excellence,<\/p>\n<p>and excellence is not meaning the best body on the planet,<\/p>\n<p>that&#8217;s not excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Excellence is you work to be a better you.<\/p>\n<p>That work is important, that work is sacred.<\/p>\n<p>That progress is sacred.<\/p>\n<p>You have to start thinking of yourself that way.<\/p>\n<p>When you have a bad day,<\/p>\n<p>you have to be able to understand that having a bad day<\/p>\n<p>is not the time to look in the mirror<\/p>\n<p>and make a judgment call<\/p>\n<p>as to whether or not your diet is being,<\/p>\n<p>is successful or not.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not the time to figure out<\/p>\n<p>whether it&#8217;s the time to change your workout.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not the time to figure out<\/p>\n<p>whether you need to be doing more or less.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not the time.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the time to step back.<\/p>\n<p>The same way we say, &#8220;When you&#8217;re really hungry,<\/p>\n<p>don&#8217;t go shopping&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>because you&#8217;re going to pick up the wrong foods.<\/p>\n<p>Common sense.<\/p>\n<p>Same with body image.<\/p>\n<p>If you are having a bad day<\/p>\n<p>and don&#8217;t really feel that good about yourself,<\/p>\n<p>that&#8217;s not the time to make any decisions<\/p>\n<p>as to what you&#8217;re going to do next<\/p>\n<p>when it comes to your fitness.<\/p>\n<p>Very, very important.<\/p>\n<p>Because again, when we look in the mirror,<\/p>\n<p>what we see isn&#8217;t objective reality.<\/p>\n<p>Evolution doesn&#8217;t need us to see objective reality.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t need us to see the photons coming back and forth.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t need us to understand<\/p>\n<p>that we&#8217;re a collection of cells that are turning over.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t need us to understand visually that we are<\/p>\n<p>looking at anything, but a collection of our memories,<\/p>\n<p>our experiences, and this interface that we&#8217;ve gotten<\/p>\n<p>used to using to perceive ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Looking in the mirror is seeing how you feel about yourself<\/p>\n<p>more than anything else, and that&#8217;s important.<\/p>\n<p>What you see is how you feel.<\/p>\n<p>Eat some junk food when you&#8217;re in the best shape possible,<\/p>\n<p>go in front of the mirror,<\/p>\n<p>you&#8217;re not going to feel that you look that great<\/p>\n<p>because in the back of your head, you did something,<\/p>\n<p>so you feel, &#8220;Oh, it must affect the way I look.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not what&#8217;s really happening.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to see that.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s really important to be able to reset<\/p>\n<p>and just keep on going, keep on going.<\/p>\n<p>Things get better.<\/p>\n<p>If you keep on going, things always get better.<\/p>\n<p>If you stay long enough, stay the course.<\/p>\n<p>Keep exercising, keep eating properly.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re going to have a good day.<\/p>\n<p>When you have a good day<\/p>\n<p>and you feel like you can really see,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey, I made these gains.<\/p>\n<p>Hey, I made this progress,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>that&#8217;s the time you make decisions,<\/p>\n<p>not the times when you&#8217;re in a bad place.<\/p>\n<p>Because there&#8217;s also something very insidious<\/p>\n<p>about being human, and that the fact that our bodies,<\/p>\n<p>like everything else in nature,<\/p>\n<p>does everything to resist change.<\/p>\n<p>Our bodies don&#8217;t want to change.<\/p>\n<p>Our bodies want to stay the same.<\/p>\n<p>And so it works with our mind<\/p>\n<p>because our bodies and our minds at the same thing,<\/p>\n<p>more or less, to try to make us revert<\/p>\n<p>to whatever it believes is our default state.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have any hair.<\/p>\n<p>When I dream, in my dreams, I have hair.<\/p>\n<p>Kind of strange, but not really,<\/p>\n<p>because for most of my life, I&#8217;m 47 years old,<\/p>\n<p>I shaved my head somewhere in my early forties.<\/p>\n<p>For 40-something years, I had hair.<\/p>\n<p>So when I close my eyes<\/p>\n<p>and I see a dream state version of myself, Kevin has hair.<\/p>\n<p>Am I going to work on trying to see myself<\/p>\n<p>in a dream state with no hair?<\/p>\n<p>Probably not, but for a very long time,<\/p>\n<p>when I closed my eyes and had a dream about myself,<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t always see the muscles.<\/p>\n<p>I did work to make sure that when I close my eyes<\/p>\n<p>and see myself, I see myself as I am today,<\/p>\n<p>not as how I was.<\/p>\n<p>And what propels me today to keep on<\/p>\n<p>reaching for excellence and training hard<\/p>\n<p>and trying to be better<\/p>\n<p>isn&#8217;t the desire to overcome some insecurity,<\/p>\n<p>isn&#8217;t the desire to overcome some perceived handicap,<\/p>\n<p>isn&#8217;t the desire to not be that skinny kid anymore,<\/p>\n<p>it&#8217;s the desire to be the best me I can be today,<\/p>\n<p>a little better tomorrow, because I enjoy the process.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s very much process-oriented.<\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s important.<\/p>\n<p>We have to get out of our heads<\/p>\n<p>because being in our heads can be dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>It can make us think that &#8220;screw it,<\/p>\n<p>everything I&#8217;ve done is not worth it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also worth it for you not to be tortured<\/p>\n<p>and feel that the person who you were when you were younger<\/p>\n<p>is the person who you are now.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not going to change unless you do something about it.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s an old saying in Latin,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Caelum non animum mutant qui trans mare currunt&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>which translates as those who cross the seas<\/p>\n<p>change their skies, not their spirits.<\/p>\n<p>Same thing happens when you transform your body,<\/p>\n<p>regardless of whether it&#8217;s a transformation of weight loss<\/p>\n<p>or muscle gain, it doesn&#8217;t matter, you&#8217;re the same person<\/p>\n<p>unless you do something to change the way you see yourself.<\/p>\n<p>So work on that positivity.<\/p>\n<p>And I really and truly hope<\/p>\n<p>that me sharing this in this video helps you realize<\/p>\n<p>that if you&#8217;ve High Intensity Training.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nFirst leg workout of the year and already pushing it!&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nI haven&#039;t done a stiff leg deadlift over 315lbs for about 3 years at this point, and I did my last set with 315lbs and comfortably got to 10 reps and decided I had far too much gas left in the tank and that I should go up in weight.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nSo I did.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nI figured I might get a solid 6 reps in, but I made it to 7 and I think I could have gone on to get a full 10 reps BUT that&#039;s when good judgement prevailed.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nAs a bodybuilder having not trained this heavy for so many years, the shock of this much weight would be more than enough to stimulate muscle growth, and doing more reps wouldn&#039;t yield any greater returns, only increase the likelihood of injury.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nIt&#039;s not about the numbers, it&#039;s about training to a point where you achieve your goal, and it&#039;s important to have a goal in mind as a bodybuilder based on increasing muscle mass rather than hitting a particular number.&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nBesides, if in my 20&#039;s I never did more than 405lbs on a stiff leg deadlift, it doesn&#039;t make any sense going heavier than when I am almost 50!&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nCould I deadlift more at this point?&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nAbsolutely but just because you can doesn&#039;t mean you should!&lt;br&gt;\n&lt;br&gt;\nSo keep those weights in a good working range, keep it safe and as always Excelsior!!!
